This year's Eid al-Fitr and Nyepi Celebrations
Bali and Lombok are two islands located close to each other and are two prime destinations for both international and domestic tourists.
As the fasting month of Ramadan approaches, Eid al-Fitri will be celebrated, while Bali will also celebrate Nyepi at approximately the same time according to the Hindu calendar.
As in previous years, during Nyepi in Bali, where the majority of the population is Hindu and adheres to traditional customs and traditions, all public activities are temporarily suspended, including airports, ports, and all entry and exit points.
Electricity blackout will occur, and all outdoor activities will be temporarily suspended. As a result, many expats living in Bali choose to travel to nearby islands like Lombok and the Gili Islands to avoid the atmosphere of Nyepi, which is characterized by complete silence.
Meanwhile, the island closest to Bali, Lombok, which is predominantly Muslim, will celebrate Eid al-Fitri, the biggest celebration after the month-long fasting of Ramadan.
Ogoh-ogoh Parade
The day before Nyepi, there is usually an ogoh-ogoh parade, which is part of the Nyepi ritual. Each village creates a statue resembling a figure considered viral, unique, or scary, or a type of demon/devil, which is usually burned at the end of the celebration as a symbol of the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil).
Takbiran Night
For Muslims in Indonesia, on the night before Eid al-Fitr, a takbiran parade is held carrying miniature mosques or other unique objects, symbolizing the victory of Muslims in overcoming their desires through the month-long fast. The following day, in a large field or courtyard, the Eid al-Fitr prayer is held, followed by greetings and mutual forgiveness.
If you are doing activities or traveling, make sure to leave well in advance or at least one day before the date above to avoid long queues or being stuck at the port due to the surge of passengers returning home for Eid or those who are leaving Bali to avoid the silence of Nyepi in Bali.
